Stage Lighting Certifications Explained: CE, RoHS, ISO 9001 and IP Ratings

When an importer asks "do your lights have CE?", the honest answer is always "which model, and which directive?" Certifications are issued against a product and a standard, not against a brand. This guide explains what each document in a stage lighting compliance pack covers, and how to check that the one in front of you is worth anything.
It is written for importers, distributors and venue buyers who have to show documentation to customs, an insurer or a client before a fixture is allowed into a building.
CE marking: what it actually covers
CE is not a single certificate. It is a declaration by the manufacturer that the product meets the EU legislation that applies to it. For a professional lighting fixture, three directives normally matter:
| Directive | Concerns | Applies to a light fixture because |
|---|---|---|
| Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU | Electrical safety | The fixture runs on mains voltage |
| EMC Directive 2014/30/EU | Electromagnetic compatibility | Switching drivers and DMX control must not interfere with other equipment |
| RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU | Restricted hazardous substances | Limits lead, mercury, cadmium and similar substances in electronics |
The document you receive is a Declaration of Conformity. It should name the manufacturer, the product and model, the directives applied, the standards used, and the person who signed it. If it is a certificate from a test laboratory rather than a declaration, that is a supporting test report — useful, but it is not the same document.
Documentation is only one of the checks worth running before you commit to a supplier — our stage lighting manufacturer sourcing guide covers the rest, including how to test a sample.
For Great Britain, the parallel marking is UKCA. For the United States there is no single federal equivalent; instead, venue operators, rental companies and insurers commonly require a listing mark from a nationally recognised testing laboratory. Always ask your buyer what their contract actually demands rather than assuming CE covers it.
ISO 9001 and ISO 45001: about the factory, not the product
These two are frequently confused with product certification, and they are not that at all.
- ISO 9001 certifies a quality management system. It means the factory has documented processes for purchasing, production, inspection and corrective action — and is audited against them.
- ISO 45001 certifies an occupational health and safety management system.
Neither one guarantees that a specific fixture will work. What they do tell a distributor is that the supplier can answer a non-conformance with a process rather than an apology. For anyone running a supplier audit programme or bidding on an institutional tender, that is the value.
IP ratings: the two digits people misread
IP stands for Ingress Protection, and the number that follows is two separate ratings, not one score. The first digit is protection against solids and dust, the second against water.
| Rating | Solids | Water | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| IP20 | Fingers and objects over 12 mm | None | Indoor clubs, bars, dry stages |
| IP44 | Objects over 1 mm | Splashing water | Covered outdoor areas, patios |
| IP65 | Dust tight | Water jets | Outdoor stages, festivals, exposed rigs |
| IP66 | Dust tight | Powerful water jets | Severe weather exposure |
Two practical notes. First, an outdoor fixture is only as waterproof as the whole chain — a single unprotected connector or a cracked cable gland undoes an IP65 housing. Second, the rating says nothing about UV resistance or corrosion, which is why coastal installations need the manufacturer to confirm materials separately.
For weather-exposed rigs, our IP65 waterproof stage lighting guide goes further into outdoor installation practice.
How to verify a certificate in five minutes
- Check the model number. It must match the model you are ordering. A company-level certificate covering a product family is common, but confirm your model is listed.
- Check the issuing body. Reputable testing organisations publish a certificate search tool. Enter the number and see if it resolves.
- Check the date. Certificates have validity periods. An expired report means the product may have changed since it was tested.
- Check the manufacturer name. If the certificate names a different factory from the one shipping your goods, ask which entity is legally responsible.
- Ask for the test report behind the certificate. A declaration without a report is a statement of intent; the report is the evidence.
What a complete compliance pack contains
- CE Declaration of Conformity, per model
- EMC and LVD test reports from an accredited laboratory
- RoHS test report
- IP test report where a weather rating is claimed
- ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certificates in the factory's legal name
- Product label artwork showing rating plate, voltage and model
- User manual with safety and installation instructions in the buyer's language
Ask for this pack before you place a bulk order, not after. A supplier who has it ready will send it the same day; a supplier who does not will promise it "next week" indefinitely.
Frequently asked questions
Is CE certification mandatory for stage lights sold in the EU?
Yes, for products covered by the relevant directives, and mains-powered lighting fixtures fall within them. The manufacturer is responsible for the declaration; the importer is responsible for making sure it exists and is correct.
Does IP65 mean a light can be used in heavy rain?
IP65 means dust tight and protected against water jets. It is a widely used outdoor rating for stage lighting, but the installation as a whole — connectors, glands, cable routing and mounting angle — determines whether it survives a real storm.
Is ISO 9001 the same as product certification?
No. ISO 9001 certifies the factory's quality management system. It says nothing about any individual fixture. Product conformity is what CE, RoHS and IP reports address.
