Animation Laser Light Buying Guide (500mW to ILDA)
Chia sẻ
Lasers add a dimension no wash or beam can: crisp graphics and aerial beams that cut through anything. Here is how to read a laser spec sheet without getting lost, how to choose power by room, and how to mount and scan safely so your show is impressive and compliant.
mw rating, decoded
Laser power is measured in milliwatts (mW). A 500mW unit is a solid indoor club laser; higher mW throws brighter, farther beams. Check the per-color breakdown (red 638nm, green 520nm, blue 447nm) — balanced RGB looks cleaner.
Control: sound / auto / DMX / ILDA
| Sound-active | Reacts to music, zero programming |
|---|---|
| Auto | Built-in patterns |
| DMX | 12–20 CH programmed looks |
| ILDA | PC-driven custom graphics |
Choosing mW by room size
For a bar or 200-cap club, 500mW reads well on the back wall. Medium venues and festivals benefit from 700mW+ for visible aerial beams that survive haze and ambient light. Remember that beam visibility depends as much on haze density and scan quality as on raw power.
Beam shows vs graphic shows
A 'beam show' is aerial fans and tunnels — great in haze and from a front-of-house position. A 'graphic show' projects logos, text and animations, best done with ILDA control and a flat projection surface. Many venues run both: beams for energy, graphics for branding moments.
Mounting and scanning safety
Mount lasers securely above head height and set scan-rate limiting so beams never rest on the audience. Follow local laser-safety rules on maximum permissible exposure and audience-scanning angles — most jurisdictions require audience-scanning fixtures to be certified and properly configured. Keep the manual and a qualified operator on site.
Indoor vs outdoor
Lasers here are indoor (IP20). For outdoor beams use a dedicated IP65 laser and follow local laser-safety rules on scan angles and audience limits.
Recommended GFlight lasers
- 500MW Full-Color Animation Laser — 12CH DMX, R/G/B graphics.
- 3-Arm Moving Head Beam Laser — moving arms + laser.
- 700MW RGB Animation Laser — higher power.
- 20W Outdoor Waterproof Laser — outdoor-rated beams.
Haze and the laser look
Lasers are invisible in clear air; you need haze to see the beams. Use a water-based haze tuned to a fine, slow-dissipating cloud, and place lasers so the beam path crosses the haze volume. Too much haze washes the beam; too little makes it vanish. Test the density during sound check with the actual show lighting.
ILDA programming basics
ILDA connects the laser to a laptop running control software, letting you draw logos, text and custom animations. Start with the built-in ILDA library, then build simple cues. Keep a non-ILDA DMX mode as backup in case the PC fails mid-show — never rely on a single control path for a headline effect.
Common laser faults
No output usually means an interlock tripped or a cable came loose. A jittery beam points to a scan-rate or grounding issue. Keep a spare ILDA cable and a known-good preset so you can recover quickly. Log every fault so recurring problems get fixed, not patched show after show.
Laser placement for the best fan
Mount lasers at front-of-house or high on side truss so beams rake across the haze toward the audience. Avoid pointing into the booth or at exits. A slight downward angle gives the classic aerial fan without scanning eyes. Mark the scan zone so nobody walks into the beam path during load-in.
Frequently asked questions
Is 500mW enough?
For a club or small hall, yes. Larger rooms benefit from 700mW+ for visible aerial beams.
What is ILDA?
ILDA is the standard PC interface for programming custom laser graphics and logos.
Are lasers safe indoors?
With proper scan-rate limiting and audience scanning rules, yes. Never point raw beams at eyes.
Do I need a license to own a laser?
Owning is usually unrestricted, but operating audience-scanning lasers in public often requires compliance with local laser-safety rules and sometimes a trained operator.
Why does my laser look weak?
Almost always lack of haze or too much ambient light. Add haze and dim the house lights; the same laser reads dramatically stronger.
